How to avoid “fat rolls” with 120 film
A “fat roll” happens when film is wound loosely around the take-up spool. This means the film isn’t tightening when you are reeling it into the spool or advancing to the next exposure.
Fat rolls are most prevalent in medium format film, and they usually lead to light leaks.
A fat roll can be avoided by keeping tension on the film. First familiarize yourself with how to load 120 film so you can identify the parts of the camera easily. Gently place your finger on the flat area near the film holder when you’re about to load the film, and slightly apply pressure while inserting the film leader in the take-up spool and advancing it. With the Diana F+ and some other cameras you can also do this while shooting, as explained in this tutorial. Having pressure plates can help as well. Just remember to be gentle – slowly but surely!
If despite your best efforts you do end up with a fat roll, do not despair and do not throw it away. Store the roll carefully until getting it developed and embrace the beauty of analogue imperfections!
